Natural Killer Cell Activity of periphral Blood in Hemodialyzed Patients

Abstract
The authors investigated the natural killer(NK) cell activity of peripheral blood, the effect of uremic serum and interleukin-2(IL-2) on NK cell activity in 36 cases of chronic renal failure patients on maintenance hemodialysis(HD) and 16 cases
of
adult
healthy subjects as control.
The mean serum creatinine and BUN levels before dialysis were 11.3¡¾2.0mg/dl(8.0~17.6mg/dl) and 88.3¡¾20.0mg/dl(51~120mg/dl) respectively. The duration of hemodialysis ranged from 2 months to 72 months(average 15 months). Nineteen patients had
received
blood transfusions, while seventeen patients had not.
The two blood samples were obtained from just before and after dialysis and the one blood sample was obtained from adult healthy samples were obtained from patients just before and after dialysis and the one blood sample was obtained from adult
healthy
subjects in Pusan National University Hospital and some hospitals of Pusan are during the period of January to August, 1991.
NK cell activity was determined as lymphocyte cytotoxicity against K562 cells.
@ES The results obtained were summarized as follows.
@EN 1. NK cell activity was significantly decreased in hemodialyzed patients as compared with health control.
2. The transfusion and duration of dialysis had no effect on NK cell activity in hemodialyzed patients.
3. NK cell activity of normal peripheral lymphocytes was more significantly suppressed by uremic sera compared with normal peripheral lymphocytes was more significantly suppressed by uremic sera compared with normal sera.
4. NK cell activity was not significantly not significantly different just before an after dialysis in hemodialyzed patients.
5. NK cell activity of IL-2 was significantly augmented in healthy subjects but was not in hemodialzed patients.
On the basis of the above results, it might be suggested that the suppressibe factors, containing dialyzable and non-dialyzable components, on NK cell activity are present in ureic sera, and the immunosuppresion in hemodialyzed patients is in
part
due
to decrease of NK cell activity of peripheral blood.
